For Patients Why do I need root
canal treatment?
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is needed when
the blood and nerve supply of the tooth (the pulp)
becomes infected through decay or injury. This
frequently leads to an abscess at the base of the
tooth.
What symptoms will I have?
Toothache, which may be severe, is a common
symptom. Pain may be experienced when a tooth is
affected by hot or cold stimulation. There may be
pain on biting or chewing. Swelling around the gum
can also occur. Occasionally, teeth requiring root
canal treatment will not give any symptoms.
What will the treatment involve?
The first aim of treatment is to get the patient
out of any pain. This will often be done by your
regular dentist. The next aim is to remove the
infected and inflamed pulp tissue, thoroughly clean
the root canals and then fill them. It is a
time-consuming procedure and can involve two or
sometimes three appointments to complete treatment.
The success rate of treatment is high. The
alternative to root canal treatment is usually
extraction.
Will the treatment hurt?
No. With the use of local anaesthetic techniques
the treatment is quite comfortable. There may be
some tenderness following treatment but it can be
controlled by the use of medication of the type one
might use for a headache.
I feel anxious about the treatment – is that
usual?
Yes, it is perfectly understandable that you may be
nervous at the prospect of root canal treatment. You
will have time to talk through your concerns with
Mark who will be able to answer your questions and
to reassure you.
How much will the treatment cost me?
The cost will depend on the tooth involved and
the difficulty of the case. Generally it will range
from £400.00 to £700.00.
Mark will see patients for a pre-treatment
consultation at a cost of £90.00. He will let you
know the approximate duration of treatment and its
cost and he will answer any questions you may have.
The total cost involved will be confirmed in writing
before treatment commences.
What happens after treatment?
After the root filling has been completed you will
need to return to your regular dentist to have the
tooth permanently filled or crowned.
